Hey all, pretty sure I've told everyone this already but we need to bring a textbook to morning meeting today. It needs to have pictures, references, footnotes and basically lots of different elements for us to play around with as we'll be re-formatting them just like the 3rd years did : )

colour

Hey there guys/Luke, this is the full colour version of my poster. It doesn't actually have a white border- no idea why its like that. Is it looking okay in colour? The pink is not actually that neon its just gone that way on my monitor..... I'll ring around printing places tomorrow/print mine and bring it in. I'll post up the prices on here so everyone can get an idea of how much printing will cost- hopefully not to expensive!!

Old Universal Pictures logo

Hey Sarah... the aesthetic here is spot on I reckon. I had thought the plane pulled a banner around the globe that had the words on it? I can't find it like that but I'm sure I've seen it? So yeah the type's not quite right for you, but the rest of it looks very DDR to me...

Drumskin

Just wanting a few opinions on my new design, still need to do much more technical work once I actually chose one, but need a starting point so I can get into it!

Information graphic

I have left my latest information graphic idea on my desk with descriptions of each of the colours indicated in the key. When you are in class please have a look and let me know what you think by either commenting on this blog or writing me a note and placing it on my desk or pining it next to my final drum skin design. (Have a look at that too please :D)

Cheers guys!!!!

Before & After Science

This is my friend Stuart Geddes blog Before & After Science. He's a Melbourne based graphic designer doing some interesting things, esp in relation to our client-based/self-motivated discussion. It's all images, but you get a sense of what he's up to...

nerd kitsch

I get the feeling that we don't use the blog enough, so from now on I'm going to encourage that as well as posting ideas, we post stuff just for lolz. This may be annoying or hey, you might check out the blog at 1am and die laughing because you just saw something tOtEZ funny (as well as some relevant design stuff also).

Starting it off with spiderman meme!
N.B this needs no explanation

Brazilian Mutants

Street fighter inspired art by Jorge Gutierrez.
According to his bio, Jorge was raised by Mexican wrestlers and learned his manly art skills after being blessed by tequila BUT the point of interest here is that he draws Blanka. Thought you'd find these interesting, particularly you Thomas, as they're an example of what happens if you play street fighter throughout all of your childhood/early adult life and they could be some nice inspiration for your infographic. The images I found are the most topical and the rest of his stuff is quite cartoony/mexican but check it out if you want to http://www.super-macho.com/ .

New designs

I haven't showed Luke these designs yet but I thought I would show you guys to see if you have any thoughts. Comments will be greatly appreciated :D

breakfast

Good news, we don't need to bring any cooking or cleaning things to camp! So that means we don't have to find tea-towels or pans or dish-washing liquid etc. All we need now is ingredients for pancakes and a couple of toppings : )  : ) Shall we talk to the fourth years about a budget on Tuesday morning?

Slight Issue

Turns out the girl who's desk we took from by the window wants to access her drawers.. we now have to come up with a new set up.

I changed my mind.

I don't want to be chief breakfast coordinater anymore. I'm not sure why I said I would in the first place. Can't someone else do it? Please.?.

Book binding classes

Glenn from photography just popped into design while some of you were at the japanese art lecture and told me to pass on the message about a Book binding workshop. It is next week on Monday and Tuesday (9th-10th May) starting at 9:00am going to 4:00pm (with a lunch break don't worry) :)

If you have lectures on monday or tuesday you can still come just excuse yourself when you need to.

Glen didn't give me the name of the lady teaching it but he said that she will teach us how to bind books using different materials. We can bring our own materials that we might want to bind too! I don't know too much else about it but it sounds pretty cool! It could come in handy...

He said that he would pop in at around 2 today to hopefully catch some of you but by then I will be at my lecture so i thought i would pass on the message!

Felt I should chuck something up about the wall for good measure.
Here is a plan that Michelle, Amy and I came up with last week and never got the chance to share.

Basically we thought we could use the panels the make the wall as divisions and fill each with examples of that subject e.g design that politically based.  Then we could size everything within each division depending on how much it fits within that area ( so for example a design that's really politically oriented would be larger than one that was less so)

Adding to that we could have some kind of horizontal/vertical split where we separate art from design or traditional design practice from more modern concepts.

Soooooo.... what do ya think?

designs

I am hoping you can see these designs this time! Please work! Pleeeeeease!!!

With both designs I tried to create one solid image instead of two separate ideas: font and image. I also tried to incorporate negative and positive space...

please comment and let me know what you think :D

Hello All : )

Took a visit to cj's music works in town and the owner, Charlie, gave me ten drumskins for free! They're a little bit smaller than a bass drumskin (these are 16inches and a bass is normally 20inches) but hey, we now have some drumskins : )

eliana's new designs

YAY SUCCESS!!

the files finally uploaded... 1 hour later!

I have used the transmutational circle as the basis for these ideas, I also experimented with black letter and have tried to make the type and image one idea not two separate ideas.

let me know what you think of these designs.

cheers!

Isotype

This site 'Isotype Institute' is resource for examples of Neurath's Isotype system. Some examples below...

See also the University of Readings project 'Isotype Revisted'.

Gerd Arntz

Gerd Arntz was the graphic designer who created Otto and Marie Neurath's Isotypes. This site has an amazing catalogue of them.

RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms

This is a really interesting little video which someone has made to sort of visually explain a talk by Ken Robinson. Not quite what we're doing, but related I thought. It's worth watching/listening to as a well... esp if you are a student.

Information Graphics

I swiped this from that blog we looked at today, Information is Beautiful.

I thought of the wall when looking at this. I don't think it's specifically 'good looking', but it does work well in it's simplicity. Everything 'means' something... where it is, what colour it is, and how big it is, is all part of the reading of the information.

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Hi everyone.
Since we need to get some drum skins to exhibit our logos, I thought I'd have a snoop around to see what music stores are open. As it turns out they are all in the CBD (sooo probably a no-go) expect for one store, "Sedley wells music works". So I've sent them an email asking if they have any drum-skins and if they do, how much. Hopefully they'll get back to me real soon so we can have an idea of cost. Also since its just by ricc mall, we could go there in person and see if we can get a group discount or something.

Whats Happening Friday

Hey not sure how many people know this but a couple of us are heading in tomorrow around 10:30 or 11 to work on the wall. If you want incentive I made a cake to bring

Daniel van der velden interview

Some light reading for the weekend? Here's the Daniel van der Velden interview on Design Observer that I was planning to hand out as a follow up to his article.

And here's a video of him speaking at one of those Walker Art Center talk things...

Stuart Bailey interview on Bad At Sports

Here is the interview with Stuart Bailey that I was talking about this morning. It might not make heaps of sense if you don't know the projects he's talking about but you should be able to find images and info on these projects on the net. I can show you copies of Dot Dot Dot, but I'm reluctant to loan them out as I lost one last year when it was 'on loan' (and they aren't replaceable!).

Other art school blogs...

Hey thanks for setting this up Alice. Here also is a link to the sculpture students blog. Can you guys ask Ella or someone from 401 what their blog is and we can link to that too. The 3rd years have a facebook group not a blog.
